In the game of video poker, the play begins by placing a bet of credits. This is done by inserting money into the machine. In the new machines, you insert a bar coded paper ticket denoting the credit. Pressing on the "Deal" button will give you a five hand card. The player has the option of retaining one or more cards and discarding the rest. In exchange for the discarded card, the player will get a replacement upon clicking the Deal button once again. The machine will evaluate the hand after the final draw and offer a payout according to the payout table posted on the machine.
Usually, typical poker machine payouts begin with a pair of Jacks in your hand. The payout schedule is based on how rare the hands are and on the returns that the casino is willing to offer. You begin playing by first putting at least $20 in the machine. You can place a maximum bet of $5, although you can bet as little as 25 cents per round, depending on the video poker game you would like to play. - A pair of Jacks or better cards will give you a winning hand.
- Similarly, a pair of Kings constitutes a winning hand in some video poker variations.
- In some cases, if you have two pairs like two kings and two fours, it is a winning hand.
- Three cards of the same face, i.e. three of a kind is also a winning hand.
- Four cards of the same face or four of a kind will give you a win.
- One wild card along with four of a kind constitutes five of a kind. The wild card can substitute any card to make a better hand in poker.
- Straight: Five cards in a sequence, although not of the same suit constitutes a straight. For instance, 4,5,6,7 and 8 is a straight. The Ace can take a high or low value in a straight. A high ace is Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten and it will be a low ace as in 5,4,3,2, Ace.
- Flush: All five cards of the same suit means a flush. For example, the King, Jack, 7, 8 and 5 of diamonds is a flush.
- Straight Flush: All cards of the same suit appearing in a sequence constitute a straight flush. So, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 of hearts is a straight flush.
- A Royal flush happens when cards like Ten, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of one suit, either hearts, diamonds, clubs or spades show up.
- You could have a wild Royal flush where one card in the royal flush series is not of the sequence. To quote an example, the Joker can take the place of Queen of hearts if it is missing in the series.
